Find it in Flanders!
Flanders, the northern Flemish-speaking region of Belgium, is a prime destination with a string of engaging cities such as Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven, Mechelen and Brussels, that offer impressive architecture, lively nightlife, first-rate cuisine and numerous other attractions for visitors.
The Flemish coast offers outstandingly impressive large, golden, sandy expanses which stretch 67 km along the Flemish coastline from De Panne (only 30mins drive from Dunkerque) to the stylish resort of Knokke-Heist.
Given its proximity to the sea, it is no surprise that the area has some of the best seafood restaurants in Flanders.
Flanders’ large number of excellent restaurants testifies to the high esteem in which the Flemish place good food.
The country has the highest number of Michelin stars per head of the population. It’s similar to French, based on game and seafood and each region has its own special dish.
From the invention of the printing press to the perfection of the portrait, Flanders has made a unique contribution to culture. Its well-funded, well-organised museums and institutions also make it a pleasure to discover.
- The Flemish Art Collection (partnership between the Groeninge Museum Bruges, the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp) is a new permanent art collection featuring a complete Flemish history from the 15th to the 21st Century.
- British Vision. Between the 6th October 2007 and 13th January 2008 the Flemish city of Ghent goes British with a new exhibition entitled British Vision - Constable to Bacon investigating 200 years of British art between 1750 and 1950.
Each of the major six cities of Flanders has its own unique atmosphere and style, providing the Traveller with a different reason to visit each one:
- Brussels – The Belgian capital is one of marked contrasts, where the old co-exisits with the new.
- Bruges – Every way you look in Bruges is a picture postcard.
- Ghent – With more than 900 listed buildings, Ghent is finding its feet as the picturesque and historic city that it is.
- Antwerp – Centre of the world diamond trade and Belgium’s fashion capital is fast becoming a place to be seen in.
- Mechelen – This city first came to prosperity through the textile and cloth trade during early medieval times – today it lays claim to two of Belgium’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
- Leuven – Home to Belgium’s largest university and headquarters of the Stella Artois brewery.
